Use metafields when your store needs information that does not fit a standard Tringify field. Examples include fabric composition, care instructions, warehouse references, delivery notes, or details supplied by an installed app.
Start with a definition#
A definition sets up one reusable field. You choose what it applies to, give it a name your staff will understand, select the kind of value it accepts, and add any rules the value must follow. For example, a Product definition named Fabric composition can hold a different text value on every product.
Then add values#
A value is the information saved for one item. Product and variant values are edited with the product, customer values with the customer, and order and order-item values with the order. For collections, categories, pages, blog content, vendors, brands, and the store itself, use Settings > Metafield Values in Store Admin or the mobile app.
Choose where the information can appear#
A metafield is available to staff by default. You can make supported fields available to your storefront, use eligible values in search or product filters, and translate supported text. Making a field available to the storefront does not display it automatically; your theme or storefront must use it.
Metafields added by apps#
Installed apps can add metafield definitions for information they manage. Depending on the access chosen by the app, your staff can edit those values, only view them, or not see them in Store Admin.
