Regional languages

Serve a regional version of a language, such as Português (Brasil), and translate only what differs.

Some languages have regional versions. Português (Brasil) and Português (Portugal) are regional versions of Português: their codes, pt-BR and pt-PT, add the region to the code of the parent language, pt. Each regional language is a separate store language with its own translations, and it counts toward your plan's language limit.

Add a regional language
  1. Open Settings > Languages.

  2. Choose Manage languages.

  3. Search for the regional language, for example Português (Brasil), and select it. To share translations between regions, also select its parent language, for example Português.

  4. Choose Save.

  5. Add the language to each storefront where shoppers should use it, and assign it to the countries it serves.

You can add only the languages listed in Manage languages.

What shoppers see

For each field, a shopper browsing in a regional language sees the first of these that exists:

  1. The translation in the regional language, for example Português (Brasil).

  2. The translation in its parent language, for example Português.

  3. The original content in your default language.

The parent language is used only while it is enabled for your store. If it is not enabled, or has no translation for a field, shoppers see your default-language content for that field.

Translate only what differs

You don't have to translate everything twice. Translate your store into the parent language first. Then, in the regional language, translate only the fields whose wording differs for that region, such as product names, sizes, or spelling. Every field you leave untranslated in the regional language shows the parent language's translation.

Outdated translations

A translation is outdated when the source text it was translated from has changed since it was saved. It shows an Outdated badge and stays on the storefront until you update it. Regional and parent-language translations are each compared with your default-language content, not with each other.

If you change the source text back to what it was when a translation was saved, that translation is current again. To refresh outdated translations with AI, select Also update outdated translations when you translate with AI.

Addresses

On a domain several countries share, the address of a regional language always includes the country: /pt-BR-us shows Português (Brasil) to shoppers in the United States and /pt-BR-br to shoppers in Brazil. A dedicated country domain doesn't need the country, for example /pt-BR. Your storefront's Country URLs page lists every address it serves.

Search engines

Search engines and other bots see exactly what shoppers see at the same URL, including text that comes from the parent language or your default language.
