What checkout asks for

How checkout adapts to what is in the cart: shipping, pickup, billing, gift cards, Store Credit and cash on delivery.

Checkout asks only for what the order needs. What is in the cart decides whether the shopper gives a delivery address and shipping method, which billing address taxes the order, and which ways to pay are offered. There is nothing to set up: it follows your products' shipping settings and your markets.

Checkout asks for

Everything ships

Delivery address, shipping method, then payment. The billing address is the delivery address unless the shopper picks a different one.

Some items ship, some don't (for example No Shipping products)

The same as above. Only the items that ship count toward shipping rates, weight and item count; the others never add a shipping charge.

Nothing ships (No Shipping products, digital items)

No delivery address or shipping method. The shopper enters a billing address on the payment step; tax is worked out from it.

Gift Card products only

The same as nothing ships, plus the recipient's details for each card.

Local pickup

The pickup location instead of a delivery address, for the whole order. The billing address is asked for once, on the payment step.

Billing address and tax

When nothing ships, the billing address decides the tax. The shopper fills it in on the payment step and it saves itself as soon as it is complete: the total updates in place, with no separate save step. Pay waits until the total includes that tax, so the amount shown is the amount charged.

Paid by Gift Card or Store Credit

When Gift Cards or Store Credit cover the whole total, checkout shows no payment methods and the button reads Place order. Applied Gift Cards and Store Credit stay applied while the shopper edits addresses or the cart; checkout prices again without reloading. A Gift Card or Store Credit can't pay for a Gift Card product.

Cash on delivery

Cash on delivery is offered only when something in the order ships, because there is a delivery to collect payment at. An order that ships nothing, or is picked up, never shows it. When a cash on delivery rule refuses an order that does ship (for example its minimum or maximum amount), the method hides or shows its reason as set in the market's When COD is unavailable setting.

When the cart changes during checkout

If the shopper removes or adds items during checkout, checkout adapts without starting over: removing the only item that ships drops the shipping steps and keeps the address already entered as the billing address; addresses, Gift Cards and Store Credit already applied stay, and totals are priced again in place.
