Assign fulfillment providers to locations

Send a location's orders to an installed fulfillment app, or fulfill a shipment yourself.

A fulfillment provider is an installed app, such as a warehouse or a shipping service, that ships the orders of the locations you assign to it. Each location has at most one provider. Your team fulfills the orders of a location without one.

  1. Install the provider's app and finish its setup in the app's own pages.

  2. Open Settings > Fulfillment in Store Admin and choose the Fulfillment providers tab.

  3. Find the location. Search by name, or filter by location status and assignment.

  4. In the location's Provider list, choose the app, or choose No assigned provider to fulfill the location's orders yourself. The change is saved at once.

Only installed apps that can fulfill orders are listed. If an app is missing, update it to its latest version or ask its developer to check its permissions. Your team needs order access to see assignments and permission to edit orders to change them.

What happens to new orders

Each new order's shipments from the location are assigned to its provider when the order is placed. The app receives a shipment once the order is ready to fulfil: when it is paid, or at once for cash on delivery, pay-later and staff-created orders. The order's status plays no part. A changed assignment applies to new orders only. A store that takes only test orders never sends them to a provider; those shipments stay with your team.

When a shipment is due, the app must still be installed with order access and fulfillment set up in its current version. Otherwise the shipment stays with your team, and the order's history says why.

Fulfill a shipment yourself

While a shipment is assigned to an app, only that app can fulfill it; fulfilling it yourself is refused until you take it back, so it is never shipped twice. To ship it yourself, open the order and choose Fulfill manually on that shipment. The app is told it no longer handles the shipment, and the change is kept in the order history.

The app is also told to stop when you uninstall it, when you cancel the order, or when an edit or refund removes all of a shipment's items. Uninstalling an app returns its open shipments to your team. Starting uninstall stops new fulfillment assignments. If uninstall cannot finish, retry it to complete cleanup.

Locations an app manages

A location an app manages is fulfilled by that app. The Fulfillment providers tab shows it as Managed by ‹app›, and it can't be given another provider. If that app doesn't fulfill orders right now, the row says so and the location's orders stay with your team.

Orders that ship from several locations

One app can be the provider for several locations. An order whose stock comes from two locations gets one shipment per location, so the provider receives two jobs and your customer gets two parcels from two addresses. Whether an order splits follows your routing setting: location priority or fewer splits, and whether orders may use multiple locations. If you uninstall the app, each of those shipments returns to your team.
