Let customers check Gift Card balances

The Gift Card page on your store, the View your gift card link and My Gift Cards in customer accounts.

Customers can check a Gift Card's balance on your online store, open a card they received from its delivery message, and find their cards in their account. These pages are part of your store and use your theme.

Checking a balance on the Gift Card page requires the code, not the recipient email or a matching customer account.

The Gift Card page

Your store's Gift Card page is /gift-cards on your store's address, for example https://example.com/gift-cards, and it works in each of your store's languages. A customer enters a Gift Card code and sees the card's balance, original value, status and expiry date. The page shows only the last four characters of the code. When a code can't be checked, the page shows the same message whatever the reason, so it can't be used to guess codes, and the number of checks from one visitor and on your store is limited. Search engines don't index the page.

To help customers find it, add a custom link to /gift-cards in a menu.

Turn the page on or off
  1. Open Catalog > Gift Cards and choose Settings, in Store Admin or the mobile app.

  2. Turn Let customers check Gift Card balances on your store on or off.

  3. Save your changes. Choose View on store to open the page.

The setting is on for every store by default. When it is off, the Gift Card page and View your gift card links show your store's page-not-found page, balance checks are refused and Gift Cards delivered meanwhile are sent without the link. Customers can still redeem their cards at checkout.

The View your gift card link

Every Gift Card has its own private link. The Gift Card Delivery email includes a View your gift card button that opens the card on your store with its full code, balance, expiry date and the sender's message. Gift Card text messages can include the same link: add {{ gift_card.view_url }} to the Gift Card message template. Messages sent before the link was available don't include it. The link stops working when the card is cancelled.

My Gift Cards

Signed-in customers see their Gift Cards in their account, newest first, in two kinds:

  • Received: cards sent to an email address or phone number the customer has confirmed in their account, and cards they bought that were sent to their own account email or phone. These show the full code, balance, status and expiry date. A card sent as a gift appears once it is sent.

  • Sent: cards the customer bought for someone else. These show the recipient's name, the card's value, and whether it is scheduled, being sent, sent or not sent, with the time it was sent or is scheduled. They never show the code or the balance.

Some cards issued before My Gift Cards was available, and cancelled cards, show only the last four characters of their code.
