Theme text is the text you enter in your theme: headings, paragraphs, button labels and other text in the sections and blocks on every page, in the header and footer, and in your theme settings, such as an announcement bar or footer text. You can translate it into each of your store's languages without opening the theme editor, in Store Admin and in the mobile app.
Text that comes with the theme, such as its default button labels, is translated by the theme itself and isn't listed. The Password, Coming Soon and Maintenance pages are translated separately. See Translate store content.
Translate theme text
Open Translations and choose the language.
Choose Theme text.
Choose the storefront and the theme. The storefront's live theme is chosen first.
Choose a page. Each page shows how many of its texts are translated and whether any are missing or outdated. Theme settings holds the text of your theme settings.
Each text shows where it is (section, block and setting), its status and the original text. Type the translation. Turn on Show only texts to translate to hide the texts that are already translated.
Save your changes.
Translations aren't changes to your theme: they apply as soon as you save them, on the theme you chose, including your live theme. They need no review and don't appear in the theme's code history. Shoppers see the translation in their language, and your original text where there's no translation.
When the original changes
Each translation remembers the text it was made from. When you change that text, the translation shows as outdated, and shoppers still see it until you update it. Translations stay with their section or block when you move it and are removed when you remove it.
Translations made in the theme editor before this page existed show as outdated once if the setting showed the theme's default text, because the text they were made from wasn't recorded. Check them and save them again.
Translate with AI
Translate with AI translates the missing and outdated texts of the page and saves them. It translates a batch of texts at a time, and the page shows the progress until all are done. Very long texts may be left for you to translate yourself. It uses your store's translation words, like other AI translation, and needs the permission to use AI translation. Review the result.
Export and import a CSV
Export CSV downloads the theme's texts in this language, one row per text, with the columns key, page, section, block, setting, type, source and translation. Fill in the translation column, then upload the file with Import CSV. The import reads the key, source and translation columns, and a row with an empty translation is left as it is. Keep the source column: it records which text each translation was made from, so a text that changed since the export shows as outdated. A file can have up to 5,000 rows and 4 MB. After the import you see how many rows were saved, and each line that failed with the reason. CSV export and import are in Store Admin.
In the theme editor
You can still translate text in the theme editor with its language switch. Translations you make there show here too.
Check a language
Check translations beside a language counts the theme text of each storefront's live theme along with your other content: how many texts are translated, missing or outdated.
