Install and switch themes

Find a theme in the Theme Store, add it to your store, preview and share it, and make it live.

Your themes are in Online Store > Themes, in the theme library. Find new ones in the Theme Store, add them to your store, try them out, and make one live when it's ready.

Find a theme

Browse the Theme Store and open a theme to see its styles, features and languages. Select Try theme to open its demo store and browse it as a shopper would. The demo is separate from your store.

Add it to your store

Select Add to store. A free theme is installed in one step. For a paid theme, you go through checkout first. A new theme arrives in your theme library without going live, so you can preview it before you switch.

Once a theme is in your store, its button in the Theme Store is Open in admin. It opens that theme in your store's theme library.

Your theme library

Online Store > Themes lists your live theme and the other themes in your store. If the library is empty, it offers Browse the Theme Store and Import theme, to upload a theme you have as a file.

  • Customize opens the theme in the theme editor.

  • Preview opens the theme preview page.

  • Share preview makes a link anyone can open for 14 days.

Try on storefront, in the theme editor and in Online Store > Themes in the mobile app, opens your real storefront with the theme in this browser only.

Share a preview

To show a theme to someone else, such as a colleague or a client, choose Share preview. In Store Admin, it's in a theme's actions in the theme library, on the theme preview page and in the theme editor's More menu. In the mobile app, it's in a theme's actions.

  • Anyone with the link can open it for 14 days. Each time you open Share preview, you get a fresh link.

  • The link shows that theme's saved changes on your real storefront. Changes you haven't saved in the theme editor aren't included.

  • Checkout accepts only test payments, and nothing is tracked.

Make a theme live

On the theme preview page of a theme that isn't live, choose Make live. Visitors see the theme on your storefront right away, and the theme that was live is no longer live. To switch at a set time, or to compare two designs first, see Test and schedule storefront designs.

Theme updates

When a Theme Store theme gets an update, preview the update to see what it changes. Then choose Update, or Update a copy to keep the theme as it is. You can undo an update for 30 days. All of this works in Store Admin and in the mobile app. If you changed the theme's code, your changes are kept; see Theme Store updates and your code changes.

Theme languages

A theme's Theme Store listing shows two kinds of languages:

  • Storefront languages are the languages of the theme's own text for shoppers, such as buttons, labels and the cart.

  • Editor languages are the languages the theme's settings are shown in, in the theme editor.

Your own content, such as products, pages and menus, can be translated into any language you sell in, whatever languages the theme ships. See Translate theme text.
